What is Microsoft SharePoint?
SharePoint is best described as a platform, bringing together numerous products and technologies designed to enhance workplace productivity in endless possible ways.
Coming in two versions - SharePoint Online and SharePoint Server, it's accessed on your server or in the cloud through a web browser or with an app.
Essentially with SharePoint, you create and manage websites - intranets, extranets and internets. And with these sites, you and your colleagues can store, organise, share, and access information from anywhere on almost any device.
- Organisational collaboration
- Document management
- Content management
- Project management
- Business Intelligence
- Business process automation
- Advanced custom search
Hosted in the cloud by Microsoft, to access SharePoint online, you can subscribe to an Office 365 plan or to the standalone SharePoint Online service. Both services are licensed on a per-user basis.
With it, you can easily create and manage secure custom sites to share files and resources with colleagues, partners and customers.
All without the associated overhead of having to manage the infrastructure.
As the name suggests, SharePoint Server can be installed and managed on-premise. However, in the latest release, SharePoint Server 2016, there are new, highly flexible deployment options - on-premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid scenario.
In comparison to the online version, SharePoint Server has more features, is fully customisable and gives you full control over privacy and compliance.
