Did you know that over a quarter of
adults and almost half of teenagers now own a smartphone?
This is an estimated 12 million adult consumers.
And of those smartphone using adults
37% say they are 'highly addicted' and will use it even when it
wakes them up.
Ofcom, the telecoms regulator, has
released, their annual Communications Market
Report. The report is a reference document containing
statistics and analysis of how we use television, radio, the
internet and telephones.
Some of the most interesting
information is about how we are increasingly using mobiles and
in particular smartphones.
- The majority of smartphones
were purchased in the last year.
- Over half (51%) of adult
smartphone users say they use their phone whilst
socialising.
- 22% use their
smartphone in the bathroom!
- Home and work lives are
increasingly merging; 30% of smartphoners use
their phone at
work for personal calls, 35% regularly use their phone for
work
calls while 'off
duty' and 24% say they use their phone for work while on
holiday.
- Over a quarter of people use
their mobile phones for internet access up from
22% to 28% in the
past year.
- Social networking is the most
popular use of the internet on mobile phones -
Facebook is the
most popular site.
- The Apple iPhone is the most
popular brand overall but BlackBerry's are the
most popular choice
among younger consumers.
- 47% of adult smartphone users
have downloaded an app.
- Regular apps downloaders are
male and aged 25-34.
- The growth in smartphone use
has been accompanied by an increase in the
volume of mobile
data transferred over the UK's mobile networks.
The increase
was forty-fold between 2007 and 2010.
