DrayTek Vigor - New Web Content Filtering Service

Wednesday, November 02, 2011

If you use the DrayTek Vigor 2820 or 2830 internet router, as many of our customers do, you might be interested in their latest web content filtering service - DrayTek GlobalView.

GlobalView has a vast array of content filtering features that let you restrict, control and monitor staff internet usage. Once applied it reduces employee time wasting and stops your internet bandwidth being clogged by high volume activities.

The filtering can block specific sites by name, for example Facebook and Ebay, or by category, gambling, social media and adult.   There are 64 different categories of web sites and every web site is checked and blocked if that category is prohibited, or if the site has been compromised.

The service also allows you to set restrictions on web site access by time schedule, allow different rights to different users, block downloading of certain file or data types, block IM/P2P applications or other potentially harmful or wasteful content.

GlobalView is installed on the router which is the internet's point of entry into your company. This makes it far more difficult to circumvent than solutions installed on client PCs.  Once installed it is very easy to manage.

Annual Subscription

The GlobalView service is offered on an annual subscription basis.

Once purchased the service is continuously updated with new or changed site categorisations and sites which have become compromised, such as infected with malware.

Not Convinced?

The internet is a useful tool in business; however the opportunity for misuse is high.  DrayTek say a recent survey of 10,000 employees had 44% admitting to surfing the web for personal use, for up to 2.1 hours each day.  If your employees are anything like these respondents their internet habits are not only costing you they are also putting your network at risk.

It is recommended that companies have an Acceptable Use policy (AUP) in place so that staff, or other users, know what they are and aren't permitted to use company computers for. Your AUP can be then be reinforced by DrayTek routers.

Top 5 Personal Internet Uses for Employees

  - Personal Email - Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo

  - Instant Messaging - MSN, AOL, Yahoo

  - Social Networking - Facebook, MySpace

  - Buying - Amazon, Ebay

  - Multimedia - YouTube, iPlayer

Everyone knows how easy it is for a quick visit to a favourite site to become a prolonged stay without realising it. The above list of activities can be immensely time consuming and addictive.

What hasn't quite made the list but could have even more serious consequences in the workplace is accessing adult or illegal material.  Not only do you not want your employees visiting such sites there is a much higher probability that such sites are infected with malware which will then affect your network.
